Buying a home? Don't stop at asking about the interest rate. Ask these four questions too.
1. What is the interest rate, and what is the APR?
Your interest rate is the percentage used to calculate the interest on your mortgage. Your APR is a broader measure that includes the interest rate plus certain loan costs and fees.
Looking at both can help you better understand and compare loan offers. Just make sure you're comparing the same type and term of loan.
2. Can I make biweekly payments?
Depending on how they're structured, biweekly payments can result in the equivalent of an extra full payment each year, which may help reduce your balance faster.
3. Do you offer mortgage recasting?
A recast may lower your monthly payment after a qualifying lump sum payment toward your principal. Availability and fees vary.
4. Can you walk me through my estimated closing costs?
Review the costs on your Loan Estimate so you understand what you're paying and can compare offers more confidently.
๐ The right lender should make the numbers easier to understand, not harder.
Save this for your next lender conversation. ๐
