Most people guess wrong. It's not the neighbor's car insurance. It's usually the tree owner's homeowner's insurance because the tree is considered part of their property, not a car accident.

Insurance is full of these hidden rules that only show up after something goes wrong. Here are 3 more that surprise almost everyone:

Food spoilage from a power outage can be covered under your homeowners or renters' policy: most people throw the food away and eat the cost.

Renting a car abroad? Your regular auto policy often stops at the border. Some credit cards quietly cover it instead, but only if you decline the rental company's coverage.

A cracked phone screen is sometimes covered under renters' insurance as "personal property damage," not just your carrier's separate phone plan.
