On this day in history in 1907…📣📰
The first Isle of Man TT Races took place, over the triangular St John’s Circuit. The race was ten laps of the 15 mile 1,430 yards course, a total race distance of 158.125 miles.
The twin-cylinder class and overall race was initially led by Rem Fowler riding a Norton. On lap 1, Fowler completed the course in 23 minutes and 19 seconds, in second place was Billy Wells in a time of 23 minutes and 21 seconds and Charlie Collier in the single-cylinder class with a time of 23 minutes and 45 seconds. The overall lead fell away as Fowler suffered a number of problems with drive-belts and spark-plugs, and on lap 7 crashed at nearly 60 mph due to a burst tyre at the “Devils Elbow” on the Kirk Michael to Peel section of the course. Fowler nearly gave up, but was told by a spectator that he led the twin-cylinder class by 30 minutes from Wells and went on to win at an average race speed of 36.22 mph and set the fastest lap of the race at 42.91 mph.

On this day in history in 1961…📣📰
The Monaco Grand Prix was held on the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, Monaco. It was the first round of the 1961 World Championship of Drivers, and the first World Championship race under the new 1.5 litre engine regulations. Ritchie Ginther led Jim Clark and Stirling Moss into the first corner but Clark quickly ran into trouble with a faulty fuel pump. Ginther dropped to third on lap 14, when Moss and Bonnier passed him in quick succession. At quarter distance, Moss had an impressive 10 second lead (in the underpowered Lotus 18-Climax) but the Ferraris of Phil Hill and then Ginther found their way around Jo Bonnier and began to close the gap. At half distance, Moss’ lead was 8 seconds, and down to 3 seconds on lap 60. Ginther moved into second on lap 75 and tried to close the gap, but Moss proved able to match his lap times, despite the 156’s horsepower advantage, to claim a famous victory.

On this day in history in 1967…📣📰
Don Prudhomme, driving a modified Ford, became the first dragster to run the quarter mile in less than seven seconds when he reached 226 mph at the National Hot Rod Association World Series in Carlsbad, California. So quick was he off the starting line that he earned the nickname “The Snake.” Winning his first NHRA title at the 1965 Winter Nationals, Prudhomme started a run of six Top Fuel titles. He switched to Funny Car racing in 1973 and went on to win four consecutive NHRA titles in that class. Prudhomme returned to Top Fuel racing at the end of his career and weathered a series of terrifying accidents before he regained his customary position at the top of the table of NHRA rankings.
