🚗💳 Do you really need to buy the rental car company’s insurance?

I recently got a new credit card and did what most people don’t do…

I read the fine print. 🤓📄

Okay, maybe not every single word — but I did find something important: an Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver.

This matters because we get this question all the time:

👉 “If I rent a car on vacation, does my auto policy cover it, or do I need to buy the rental company’s insurance?”

For many New York drivers, your personal auto policy may extend coverage when you rent a vehicle. But there can still be gaps, especially for things like:

⚠️ Loss of use
⚠️ Diminished value
⚠️ Certain excluded rental situations

The good news? Some credit cards may help fill part of that gap. In my case, the card may cover loss of use, which is pretty nice. 👍

But it still does not cover everything — including diminished value.

So before your next trip, don’t just automatically say yes or no at the rental counter. Check your auto policy, check your credit card benefits, and know what you’re comfortable with.

🚗💥 One of the most common auto insurance claims we see?
Glass breakage.

And here’s where people can get tripped up…

A lot of drivers assume that if they have “full coverage” — comprehensive and collision — then full glass coverage is automatically included.

In New York, that’s not always the case.

Most agents include full glass because it’s such a common claim, but if you swap a vehicle yourself through an app or online portal, you may have to manually select the right glass option.

That small checkbox matters. A windshield replacement can easily run $1,000–$2,000 today. 😳

Before you change vehicles or update coverage yourself, make sure full glass is included — or check with your agent first.
