September is home to some truly remarkable moments in history. From breakthroughs in medicine to the furthest reaches of space, these are the kinds of milestones that remind us of what becomes possible when human ingenuity, courage, and determination come together.

Here are three we are celebrating this month:

🫀 September 2, 1952 - At the University of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota surgical team (Drs. F. John Lewis, C. Walton Lillehei, Mansur Taufic, and Richard Varco) performed the first successful open-heart surgery using a technique called hypothermia, often called “code chill” or “code cool,” to temporarily stop the heart's blood flow.

🚀 September 5, 1977 - NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft, which has since become the most distant human-made object ever to travel through space. Onboard is the Golden Record, a carefully assembled message from Earth intended for any extraterrestrial life that may find it.

🏗️ September 30, 1935 - In the middle of the Great Depression, construction on the Hoover Dam commenced, a monumental feat of engineering that was finished two years ahead of schedule.

As summer slowly gives way to fall, we are reminded that change can feel a little easier when we are surrounded by strong friendships. This month, we are sharing a story about five friends whose bond has proven that no matter how much life changes, some connections only grow stronger with time.

Since 1982, John Wardlaw, Mark Rumer-Cleary, Dallas Burney, John Molony, and JD Dickson have been returning to the same cabin on Copco Lake in California to recreate the same photo. The same five friends, the same spot, every five years.

What started as a spontaneous snapshot taken when they were 19 has become a four-decade tradition that neither distance nor time has been able to interrupt. This story serves as a beautiful reminder that strong friendships are built around showing up for one another, year after year, no matter what life brings.

August is filled with moments that remind us of what can happen when someone dares to do something never done before, moving the rest of the world forward with them. Here are a few milestones we are celebrating this month:

🌊August 6, 1926 - Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, completing the 21-mile crossing in 14 hours and 31 minutes. Not only did she make history, but she also beat the existing men's record by nearly two hours.

🎵August 12, 1877 - Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, giving the world its first device capable of recording and playing back sound. The first words captured were a simple recitation of "Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

📺August 29, 1997 - Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph founded Netflix in Scotts Valley, California, starting out as a simple DVD rental service by mail. Netflix eventually grew into one of the most influential entertainment platforms in the world.
