The phones are already starting to ring after the recent storms, so I wanted to share a few tips that could save you time, money, and frustration.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that homeowners insurance covers flooding. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. Flood damage requires a separate flood insurance policy. However, if water entered your home because of a sump pump failure, drain backup, or sewer backup, you may have coverage if your policy includes Water Backup coverage.

If your basement has water in it, don’t wait to start cleaning it up. Remove as much standing water as you safely can, get fans and dehumidifiers running, move belongings off the floor, and take plenty of photos of any damaged property. Acting quickly can help prevent mold and additional damage.

If you’re thinking about hiring a restoration company, keep in mind that they can be expensive. If your Water Backup coverage has a limit, it’s important to use those dollars wisely, especially if you’ll also need to replace flooring, drywall, or other building materials.

PSA: If your roof was impacted by recent storms or hail, be cautious about unsolicited roofing companies showing up at your door.

Avoid letting “storm chasers” get on your roof or asking you to sign anything on the spot. What they present as a simple inspection agreement can actually lock you into using them for insurance-related repairs.

Instead, work with established, reputable local roofing companies that have a proven track record in your area. Take a few minutes to verify. Check their website, history, and local presence. Are they truly local, or just passing through after the storm?
