Not sure if you’re affected by the new Social Security Fairness Act that was signed into law on January 5th?

About 72% of public employees work in Social Security-covered employment where they pay Social Security taxes and are not affected by the recent repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) or Government Pension Offset (GPO). Some individuals who had "non-covered" pensions will be getting make-up payments due to the new Act.

Let’s talk about this and review your current retirement strategy to be sure it will provide for the retirement lifestyle you envision.

Today, CMS announced an extension of the temporary special enrollment period (SEP) to help people who are no longer eligible for Medicaid or CHIP transition to Marketplace coverage in states using HealthCare.gov. The end date of this “Unwinding SEP” will be extended from July 31, 2024, to November 30, 2024, which will help more people leaving Medicaid or CHIP secure affordable, comprehensive coverage through the start of the next open enrollment period. This extension will be crucial to ensuring people remain covered, including in states that have given people additional time to renew their coverage, as CMS has recommended, to help eligible people stay enrolled. States with state-based Marketplaces can adopt similar extensions.

CMS announced this morning that the new Part B premium in 2023 will be $164.90, a reduction of $5.20. The Part B deductible will also be reducing from $233 to $226.

The reductions are largely because of the lower-than-expected spending on Aduhelm, the new Alzheimer's drug. This decrease in premium aligns with the CMS recommendation made in May 2022.

The Medicare Part A inpatient hospital deductible that beneficiaries pay if admitted to the hospital will be $1,600 in 2023, an increase of $44 from $1,556 in 2022.

In 2023, beneficiaries must pay a coinsurance amount of $400 per day for the 61st through 90th day of a hospitalization ($389 in 2022) in a benefit period and $800 per day for lifetime reserve days ($778 in 2022).

For beneficiaries in skilled nursing facilities, the daily coinsurance for days 21 through 100 of extended care services in a benefit period will be $200.00 in 2023 ($194.50 in 2022).
