The Week Ahead 📊🏡

Mortgage rates are heading into September with a lot riding on this week’s economic data.

The average 30 year fixed mortgage rate finished last week around 6.81%. Inflation is still running above the Fed’s 2% target, and the possibility of another rate increase is back on the table.

The biggest report to watch is Friday’s employment report. If hiring and wage growth continue to cool, that could help ease some pressure on interest rates. Stronger than expected job growth could push rates higher.

For homebuyers, higher rates continue to make monthly payments a big part of the conversation. The good news is that growing inventory and slower home price appreciation may give buyers a little more negotiating power in some markets.

For those of us in the mortgage and real estate industry, this is another week where the economic data could move rates quickly.

The big things I am watching are employment, wages, inflation, oil prices, and how the Fed responds to all of it.

The Week Ahead 👀

There is a lot for markets to work through this week.

Mortgage rates remain elevated, and long term Treasury yields continue to be the bigger challenge. Even with expectations growing that the Fed may hold in September, the bond market is still looking for more confidence that inflation is moving in the right direction.

This week brings PCE inflation, GDP, new home sales, consumer confidence and Jackson Hole, where Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s comments could have a meaningful impact on rates.

Stocks will also be watching the bond market closely, while another big week for AI earnings could help set the tone for technology.

For housing, affordability remains the key. Any improvement in inflation and long term yields could help mortgage rates, but there is still a lot to watch.
