September always feels as much like the start of a new year as January does. School starts back and everyone gets in a new routine. That makes it a good month for a small yearly habit.

Look at your plan. Does it still describe the life you're heading toward? Did anything change in the last twelve months that the plan doesn't know about yet?

An hour this month is usually enough to catch the gaps.

Here is a test worth trying. Say your financial plan out loud to someone else in one or two sentences.

If you can do it, you have a plan. If it comes out as a list of accounts and a general feeling of hoping it works, you have holdings and intentions, which is a different thing.

That gap is not a failure. It is just the part that has not been written down yet.

Raise your hand if you'd give this a try. ✋️

If your employer offers a retirement plan with a matching contribution, that match is part of what you are being paid. It is compensation with a condition attached.

When you do not contribute enough to receive the full match, you are declining a portion of your own pay. Most people who do this are not choosing to. They set the contribution during onboarding, on a busy week, and never looked at it again.

When open enrollment season arrives, take a look.

There is a question that lands on almost every young professional within a year or two of the first real paycheck. Should the extra money go toward the loans or into investing?

It gets asked as though there is a correct answer waiting to be found, and as though choosing wrong means losing.

Our newest post sets that framing down. For most people the honest answer is that it is not one or the other, and the order you do things in matters more than the choice itself.

Most of us are running at least one money habit we never chose. We picked it up from a parent or a grandparent and it came along for the ride.

Some of them are good. Someone taught you to keep a cushion and you have never regretted it. Some of them are less good and you know exactly which one it is.

What did you inherit? We would love to hear it. 👇️👂️

A huge thank you to this year’s Night Owl on the Town gala sponsors! Their generosity and support directly help us save the lives of thousands of wild animals each year! We encourage everyone to support these wildlife-friendly businesses and organizations that are making a real difference for wildlife and conservation in our community.

A task worth doing this month while you are already in the paperwork:

Look at the beneficiaries on your retirement accounts and insurance policies. Not the will. The accounts themselves.

Those designations were made at some point in your life, possibly a long time ago, and they generally sit outside your will entirely. They still say whatever you told them to say the year you filled out the form. It takes five minutes to check and it is the kind of thing families are grateful someone thought of.

Back to school feels like a scramble because we treat it like a scramble.
It does not have to be one. It is a predictable expense arriving on a predictable date, which puts it in the small category of financial events you can see coming from a year away.

Our new post is about the version of planning we care about most. Not the dramatic kind. The kind where a family sees August coming and then gets to spend the month thinking about their children instead of their receipts.

An expense you can see coming from a year away belongs in a different category than an emergency.

School costs, holiday travel, the insurance premium that lands every spring. None of these are surprises. They only feel like surprises because we treat them like they are.

A year of small set-asides turns a scramble into a line item. That is the whole trick.

Financial literacy is usually discussed as a curriculum problem. In our experience it is closer to a household one.

Children absorb money habits the same way they absorb everything else, by observation, long before anyone sits them down. What they see is not the spreadsheet. It is whether a tradeoff gets named out loud, whether a question gets a real answer, whether the subject is treated as ordinary or as something you handle when the kids are asleep.

Parents often feel unqualified to teach this. The qualification is mostly a willingness to be seen deciding.
