GLP-1 and Weight loss drugs are more than just weight loss...
The good news is that GLP-1s are effective in most people helping to control weight. The downside is that because they are being prescribed so often, it will affect bottom line profitability of the drug plan.
5 years ago, generally 4% of everyone hit their Max out of pocket on their drug plan, last year it was 20%. What that means is anything over the Max is covered by the drug plan, nothing else contributes. 5 years ago, not many were able to afford GLP-1s now not the case, now 1 in 5 with diabetes are taking them now.
That means a major factor in calculating the premium on a stand alone drug plan (these go with a Medicare Med Supp) is GLP-1s, and there will be no other premium assistance from the government to help with the premium. If you have a Medicare Advantage, there is more room to afford GLP-1s on the drug plan and they will be less affected or remain stable.
What this means is a big factor in your stand alone drug premium in 2027 is going to be GLP-1s, because people will hit their Max out of pocket, the excess falls onto the insurance company, they in turn will raise rates in 2027, my opinion, we shall see shortly.
Because, drug plans will probably raise rates in 2027, the birthday rule being in effect and so many people hitting their Max out of pocket on their drug plan. Kind of looks like people may have to drop their Med Supp.
