If you owe child support, student loans, back IRS debt, or not sure❓
Contact the US Treasury offset Department number at 800-304-3107.
This automated system will let you know if your tax return will be offset. Many states will do a settlement amount on child support. If you have a defaulted student loan that will offset your return, you could have the loan reassigned (have a third party assume/buy off your loan). This process takes 30 – 60 days. Once processed your loan would be removed from the offset department list and you could receive your return.

Can child support take my federal tax return?

If you owe child support arrears, the IRS might take your tax refund. If you are behind in child support and your state child support enforcement office collects your payments from you, the IRS will take your tax refund to cover the arrears (often called a tax refund seizure).
