You don’t have to drive for Uber or DoorDash to be using your personal vehicle for business.

Maybe you’re a contractor driving from job to job. You keep tools in the truck. You pick up materials. You stop at a customer’s house to give an estimate.

Maybe you’re a realtor showing houses, a photographer hauling equipment, or a salesperson visiting customers.

You bought the vehicle personally. It’s titled in your name. You insure it on your personal auto policy.

None of that changes how you’re actually using it.

And if your insurance company thinks it’s insuring a vehicle for personal use while you’re regularly using it to make a living, you can have a coverage problem when there’s a claim.

If you use your vehicle for work, make sure your agent knows exactly how you’re using it so your policy can be set up correctly before you need the coverage.

You turn on DoorDash to make a little extra money. Or Uber. Or Lyft. Maybe Instacart.

You’re still driving the same car you drove yesterday, but now you’re using it to make money. And that can change the insurance picture.

Don’t assume that because the app says it provides insurance, you’re covered for everything that can happen while you’re working. Coverage can depend on the app, what your personal policy covers, and even what stage you’re in when an accident happens.

Before you start driving, make sure you understand what your own policy covers and what the app actually provides.

You want to figure out where the gaps are before you have a claim, not after.

A truck can be titled in your name, paid for personally, and insured on your personal auto policy. But if you're driving it from job to job, hauling tools or materials, or using it every day to make a living, you probably need to have a conversation with your agent.

Make sure your insurance carrier knows exactly what's going on so there won't be any question if a claim arises.

Before you bring another electric “toy” home, run this checklist:
1) What exactly is it? Class 1, 2, or 3—and where is it legal to ride here?
2) Who’s riding? Adult, teen, or kid—and do they have the right helmet and lights?
3) If they hit someone, what coverage could respond? Don’t assume.
4) Where will you charge it? OEM charger, nonflammable surface, unplug when full.
That’s how you keep the fun and lose the surprises.

What happens if you hit somebody on an e‑bike or scooter? Don’t assume your homeowners, renters, or auto policy automatically covers every motorized device. Definitions and exclusions matter. A 5‑minute chat today can prevent a messy surprise later.

E‑bikes aren’t all the same—and the rules aren’t either. Class 1, 2, and 3 work differently and that can change where you can ride in Michigan and Ohio. Want the quick skinny on roads, sidewalks, bike paths, and state‑managed trails, plus age/helmet and labeling rules before you buy? We put it all in today’s guide below.

Your garage isn’t the same garage it was ten years ago—and neither are the batteries we’re charging in it. We had a family member lose over $100,000 after an electric skateboard battery exploded. Most of the damage came from smoke and toxic fumes, not flames. Tonight, take a 2‑minute walk-through: What’s plugged in? Where is it charging? Are you using the charger the manufacturer specifies? Small changes can lower risk in a big way.
