One Social Security detail surprises people more than almost anything else I cover in my courses: if you claim later than your full retirement age, your benefit generally grows by about 8 percent for each year you wait, up to age 70, for anyone born in 1943 or later.

That doesn't mean it's the right move for everyone. Your health, whether you're still working, and what your spouse plans to do all factor in, and for some people claiming earlier makes better sense. What it does mean is that this decision carries more weight than most people realize, and it's permanent once it's made.

I'm not affiliated with the Social Security Administration, and I don't give tax or legal advice, but helping you think this through is a good part of what I do at Kay Russell and Associates.

Life insurance is one of those things people set up once and then don't revisit, often for years. The trouble is, the coverage you chose back then was built around the life you had then. A new job, a move, a marriage, a grandchild, or a change in income can all be reasons to review your policy.

A review doesn't mean changing anything. Sometimes it confirms you're in good shape, and sometimes it reveals a gap that's usually easier to close sooner rather than later. Either way, you'll know where you stand.

If it's been a while since you checked your coverage, I'm glad to go through it with you. Feel free to give me a call anytime at 800-469-8869.

As the year moves into its final stretch, I like to check one thing with clients that's easy to overlook: how much market risk they're actually carrying.

Portfolios drift over time, and a mix that suited you a few years ago can end up more aggressive than you'd choose today, especially if retirement is closer now than it was then.

Wealth preservation is a core part of what I do at Kay Russell and Associates, and it starts with knowing where you stand rather than assuming.

If retirement is 5-10 years away, the planning starts to change. Saving matters a little less than sequencing, and a handful of questions do most of the work in narrowing things down. Three of them come up in nearly every conversation I have:

▪️When should I claim Social Security, and how does that decision affect my spouse
▪️Which accounts will my monthly income come from once the paychecks stop
▪️What happens if the market drops during my first few years of retirement

There isn't a single right answer to any of these, which is why they're better worked through than guessed at. Most people walk out with fewer open questions than they came in with.

We see it all the time: people set up a life insurance policy, then forget about it as their life keeps changing. New income levels, a growing family, or a bigger mortgage can all shift what real protection looks like.

Life insurance should be based on the income your household relies on. When responsibilities grow, adequate coverage becomes even more important.

If you’re unsure whether your policy still fits your current stage of life, our team can walk you through how to estimate your needs and decide when it’s time for a review.

If it’s been a while since you last checked your coverage — or if your income has changed since we last connected — we’re here to help you make sure your protection still matches your goals.
