Retirement Ages Everyone Should Know

Retirement planning isn't just about how much you save—it's also about knowing the key ages that can unlock opportunities and help you avoid costly mistakes.

🔹 50 – Catch-up contributions begin
Boost your IRA and 401(k) savings beyond the standard limits.

🔹 55 – Rule of 55
You may be able to access your former employer's 401(k) without the 10% early withdrawal penalty if you leave your job during or after the year you turn 55.

🔹 59½ – Penalty-free retirement withdrawals
The 10% early withdrawal penalty generally goes away for IRAs and qualified retirement plans.

🔹 60–63 – Enhanced catch-up contributions
A chance to supercharge retirement savings during your peak earning years.

🔹 62 – Earliest Social Security eligibility
You can start collecting benefits, but your monthly check will be reduced.

🔹 65 – Medicare eligibility
One of the most important healthcare milestones in retirement.

🔹 67 – Full Retirement Age
Receive your full Social Security benefit without early-retirement reductions.

🔹 70 – Maximum Social Security benefit
Waiting until 70 can significantly increase your monthly income.

🔹 73 – Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) begin
Most retirees must start taking distributions from traditional retirement accounts.

🔹 75 – Future RMD age for those born in 1960 or later
Under SECURE Act 2.0, the RMD age increases to 75 for individuals born in 1960 or later.

Before year-end sneaks up on you, here are 5 money moves worth reviewing:
✅ Check your 401(k) contribution pace to make sure you're on track to maximize your annual contributions.
✅ Review your tax withholding so you don't end up with an unexpected tax bill next spring.
✅ Evaluate your 529 plan contributions. Many states offer valuable state income tax deductions or credits.
✅ Take advantage of remaining HSA and FSA opportunities. These accounts can provide meaningful tax savings if you're eligible and haven't fully funded them.
✅ Revisit your investment allocation. Strong market moves can shift your portfolio away from its intended risk and return objectives.
Mid-year is the perfect time for a financial checkup. A few small adjustments today can make a meaningful difference by December 31.
