Understanding rural America means knowing the land, the people, and the decisions that affect them. 🏡

First South’s Mississippi Chief Appraiser Brett Cates headed to Washington, D.C., for the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers’ (ASFMRA) Leadership Experience program.

While there, Brett met with legislators, including Cindy Hyde-Smith and Senate Ag Committee Chairman John Boozman, to talk about programs, regulations, and policies that affect agriculture and rural communities. The group also sat down with NRCS and FSA directors and representatives from USDA Rural Development and the World Agricultural Outlook Board.

They heard from the National Association of Wheat Growers, National Corn Growers Association, USA Rice Federation, and IFPA North America about the economic outlook and challenges producers are navigating.

Brett shared, “It was an excellent opportunity for meaningful conversations with those in charge of developing and implementing agricultural policy across the U.S.”

What comes after the classroom? For some LSU College of Agriculture students, it could be a career in agricultural lending. For others, a future back on the family farm. 🌾

First South’s John Sport and Loan Officer Sam Summers visited two LSU Ag Econ classes to talk about both, connecting what students are learning now to the opportunities ahead. From internships and interview advice to preparing for a loan, they shared practical guidance for taking that next step.

As John shared, “If you truly want to invest in your own farming operation, then work toward that, whatever that looks like,” reminding students that everyone’s journey looks different.

A strong future for Alabama agriculture starts with people willing to lead. 👏 First South’s Jake Tucker joined his fellow Agricultural Leaders for Alabama (A.L.F.A. Leaders) Class VII members in Montgomery for their first institute, getting to know one another and learning how the Alabama Farmers Federation works from the grassroots up.

We’re proud to have Jake representing First South and look forward to following along!

Our First South team was back on campus for the LSU College of Agriculture Career Fair, meeting the next generation of Ag Tigers and talking about how their passion for agriculture could turn into a fulfilling career.
