Applications are now open for the 2027 Cohort of the Community Investment Training program, a 16-week opportunity offered through the Richmond Fed’s Rural Investment Collaborative.

The program aims to help community leaders across the Fifth District develop investment-ready community and economic projects in their communities. Using a curriculum provided by Invest Appalachia, participants learn how to cultivate effective partnerships within their communities, hone their funding pitches and more.

Participants who complete the training will receive a mini grant funded through the Collaborative’s philanthropic partner organizations to further develop their proposals and to support activation of their projects. (Link in comments.)

Understanding the economy is more than data. It's also about understanding the experiences of people.

Talking with business and community leaders across the Fifth District gives the Richmond Fed real-time insights into the region's economy—uncovering emerging trends that economic data sometimes miss and adding context and color to the economic opportunities and challenges facing local residents.

In our latest episode of Going Up, Suzanne Holland shares how economic sensing captures these important on-the-ground perspectives to help inform monetary policy decisions.

Why hasn’t the natural business cycle ebbed and flowed at the rate it has historically — and why has unemployment remained at a historically low level despite rising gradually since 2023? Do these unusual patterns reveal something about how the U.S. economy is evolving?

These are the questions Richmond Fed economist Claudia Macaluso explores in a recent episode of Speaking of the Economy, where she breaks down what makes this cycle so unusual — and why it matters. https://bit.ly/4d7GxIl

On June 4, attend the next Connecting Communities webinar that will share the major findings from the annual Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking (SHED), which were released in May 2026.

The SHED survey is one of the Federal Reserve Board’s key tools for understanding the financial circumstances of low-income families and understanding potential risks to their financial health. In this webinar, economists from the Board will discuss trends in family finances, employment, and financial risks experienced by US adults.

Recently, Richmond Fed colleagues teamed up with Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity, where they got hands-on experience helping install flooring for a future homeowner. It was a chance to learn new skills, connect with each other, and support work that creates lasting impact in our communities.

Giving back is an important part of who we are. Whether through Bank-sponsored initiatives or personal passions, we encourage employees to support their communities. Each employee receives 16 hours of paid volunteer leave to support causes that matter to them.
