Extreme fire risk today/next few days in the region. Lower humidity, breezy (windy today), dry conditions make for prime fire conditions. Please keep units clean, make sure kill switch flipped at end of day (increase in preventable after hours electrical fires), fire watch conducted (someone on job for 30 min after shutdown) and make sure units parked safe distance away from each other to reduce fire spreading risk. Keep water source, multiple fire & cold fire extinguishers on site, especially if running chippers, blow down units more frequently, remove debris from around unit to reduce fire risk. Make sure everyone in your operarion knows your address in case of fire/medical emergency. Yall stay safe out there!

Greatly appreciate Paul Trotter Scott & his family/crews from Scott Brothers Logging for taking the time to meet and discuss saftey today with Ryan Barton from Forestry Mutual & Jason Critzer. Few key topics from the trucking, in woods, and OSHA training today:

1) Always leave yourself a way out when driving.
2) Deck safety, drivers stand on safe zones while loading, skidder operators stay off phones, situational awareness (numerous injuries occur on decks along with hundreds of thousands in paid claims every few years related to auto & equipment damages/running into units).
3) Blind spots- not just on trucks, but equipment, they're everywhere & dangerous. Monday morning, if you've never had employees switch around in units, do this, have others stand in blind spots. A simple, quick exercise like this could save a life. No matter how bright your high vis is, if you're in a blind spot, your invisible to the operator.
4) ALWAYS leave enough space when stopping so you can see the vehicle in front. Hundreds of thousands paid each year in claims where vehicle in front " disappears" due to stopping to close. Not many things are 100% in life, but these claims are 100% preventable.
5) Hot weather quickly approaching, make sure to stay properly hydrated days in advance to help reduce heat injury risk. Know the signs of a heat injury, how to prevent, how to respond in event of injury (in picture).

Yall stay safe out there & have a great weekend!

**Extreme fire risk day** Seems like this Spring there have been more cold, dry fronts than in years past. Even this this morning is a little humid, conditions will deteriorate with low humidity, dry, gusty 20-30 mph winds this afternoon creating perfect fire conditions. 7 of the last 8 chipper & grinder fires occurred on days like today. Please blow down units this am, remove debris from around chippers & grinders to help reduce fire risk. Recommend blowing down units mid day as well (fire conditions will increase throughout day). Keep water source on site, multiple cold & regular fire extinguishers on deck/near chippers. Have a plan, if a unit it catches fire, what is everyone's role on the job (in case of chipper fire, generally around a loader, if able, use dozer or skidder blade to move chipper away from loader, mitigate loss). Make sure everyone on your job knows job location so if fire department (or other emergency services) needed, anyone can make the call. No one wins in the event of a fire/claim, be proactive, help prevent becoming the next fire. Yall stay safe out there!

We greatly appreciate everyone that came to Richmond Expo 2026 & stopped by our booth this weekend! Great time catching up with friends in the industry, even during these tough times, great to see all the laughs & great stories. Few notable items:

1) Governor stopped by our booth, I informed her how insurance is #1 issue (per Timber Harvester mag), without tort reform, rates will continue to increase, largely due to many expensive fraudulent & outrageous claims. Seemed to get her attention regarding a $1m lawsuit over a cracked windshield & a minor fender bender resulting in a multimillion dollar lawsuit. This lead to #2 issue for the industry, markets, & how VA needs more forest products markets.

2) After 14 years of debate, we finally figured out that my dad & I actually are related to one of our loggers!

3) Dad able to catch up with 3 of his bosses at the same time, photo op, from the self insurance days in the early 80s.

4) State forester, Terry Lasher, able to stop by & chat about industry issues, photo op with some of our team.

5) Roy & Michelle of Reaves Timver of VA won the Bitco cooler (Michelle was extremely excited)!

6) We received in person our 1/3 century of partnership award with Bitco (likely only one in the nation)!

7) 40th Expo, 40 years Gaines & Critzer Ltd in business!

8) Helped push back on/educate a major player in forest products that would require pollution liability and $5M excess limits. Explained this isn't economically possible for the industry, or in line with industry standards. Appears this will not come to fruition, win for logging.

We appreciate everyone's time & business, look forward to helping out new friends we met at yhe Expo. Give us a call, 804-330-8181, for your forestry & commercial insurance needs. We greatly appreciate everyone's business, stay safe out there, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Extreme fire conditions over the next few days, very dry, low humidty, slight breeze. Please ensure units blown down/debris removed, fire extinguishers fully charged (cold fire & regular fire extinguishers), & if running a chipper/grinders, need to keep large capacity water source on deck. 85%+ of chipper fires we've seen over last 5 years occurred on days such as today/this week, caution operators to blow down more frequently to reduce fire risk. Ensure someone sticks around for 30 minutes after shutdown to monitor area. You're equipment is essential to your operation, your livelihood, 30 extra minutes on site, few extra minutes cleaning, few extra fire prevention items can be the difference in losing it all or preventing the next fire.

Also, first real hot spell of the year. Make sure everyone is staying properly hydrated, water on site, etc. Good time to review heat stroke stroke/injury signs with your crew and what to do in event of heat injury. Better to be proactive than reactive, could save someone's life.

Look forward to seeing everyone this week at the logging expo in Doswell VA, booth #118, right across from where you get your SHARP logger credits. Yall stay safe out there & see everyone this Friday/Saturday!

40 years ago (& a week), Ronnie Gaines & Scott Critzer started what is known as today, Gaines & Critzer Ltd. We've come a long way over the last 4 decades, building relationships with insurance carriers/programs, serving on boards & participating in numerous forest products associations & safety groups(TEAM) in the region, conducting many safety meetings over the years for individual operations & SHARP loggers, and most importantly, building relationships, providing insurance solutions, and servicing our clients in the industry.
Many things have changed in the industry since 1986, but one thing has not, our dedication to providing knowledgeable & excellent service, competitive insurance options specific to forest products, and our appreciation for the forest products industry. Without the forest products industry, we would be a third world country, & our agency would not be here. We greatly appreciate all of the support over the years & look forward to many more years of servicing forest products & other commercial businesses in VA, NC, WV! Our agency looks forward to catching up with everyone next week at the expo in Doswell, stay safe out there!
