Extremely hot out there these next few days! Make sure staying properly hydrated, looking out after each other. Know the signs of heat injury & what to do. Yall stay safe out there!

In recent weeks, I've noticed a majority of dump trucks & logs trucks that passed/stopped at lights, etc in the region were not wearing seat belts. Seat belts save lives, wear them. We've heard stories from emts & officers finding drivers 20+ft in front of a tractor after hitting a tree, body parts 100+ yards behind where a tractor came to rest, etc, due to not wearing seat belts (ejections, flying out side of windows in rollovers etc) why would you want this to be what your family hears after a bad accident? Few items to consider:

1) Work comp carriers may try to deny a claim where injury would have been prevented by wearing seat belt (seen it happen).
2) Some commercial auto carriers will not approve drivers if seat belt violations on MVR (if you're not going to take 2 extra seconds to protect yourself, idea is that higher risk driver, also likely increase payout in event of claim if writing comp). If you want to keep your job, wear the belt.
3) As an employer, you should have a seat belt policy signed by all drivers to help protect you from possible legal fallout after an accident.(& enforce it!!)
4)Keep extra items limited in vehicle & secured. All of that unsecured "stuff" becomes a claymore going off in the cab (or personal vehicle) in event of accident & could kill you.

Overall, wear your seat belt to help protect you, help keep your job options open/job securement, and keep your cab as clean as possible to help arrive alive. Yall stay safe out there!

It's that time of year again! Much of the region recently started school again (or will in near future). When traveling roads during pick up/drop off times, be extremely careful, know your routes, take it a little slower in the blind curves/hills, etc to help reduce accidents. If a few busses pass you with no cars behind them, be prepared to stop for the last bus which is the one unloading kids. Also, take it slow in school zones, especially during loading/unloading times (more schools work cameras as well). Many insurance carriers have zero tolerance for a speeding ticket in a school zone. Stay professional, stay vigilant, & stay safe out there!

Each year, we see a few accidents involving trucks backing into private driveways which are 100% preventable, and generally are severe claims, truck driver ticketed, results in injuries and hundreds of thosuands paid out (if not millions). If no safe way to get into drive, find new location or take truck back to shop, job site, etc.

Seen a chip van driver in eastern VA backing in last week. Had to lock it up, then traffic had to come to a stop and wait. Luckily everyone was paying attention & stopped but you can't rely on majority of public to be situationally aware & stop. Almost every scenario I can think of will result in the truck driver being at fault in these situations(short of signs and flaggers present), & many insurance carriers ask if backing exposure present, do not want this exposure, can reduce insurability issues (due to the large liability exposure increase that backing causes).

Please confirm your drivers (if taking trucks home) have a safe, no backing, entry and exit. Also, if you use sub haulers that pull your trailers, may want to double check your subs entry (or not have them pull your trailer to house). If a sub backs in with your trailer, other party hits trailer, 99.9% you're being brought into the claim & likely lawsuit.

This can be a very messy, expensive type of claim that is 100% avoidable. If your drivers take the trucks home, check out the parking situation, drive by, ask, etc, the last thing you want is a fatality and/or put out of business. Yall stay safe out there & have a great week!

Friday afternoon, many jobs shutdown but a few still out there logging/ hauling. Excellent job of keeping equipment a safe distance away for the weekend on this job. No one wants to lose a unit to fire, but it's worse losing multiple due to staged too close/fire transfer. Few guys I met with today have had or know someone that has had multiple units burn after hours. Keep units at least 75-100ft apart to help reduce fire transfer risk, flip kill switch at end of day, make sure debris removed from heat sources to reduce fire risk, and someone sticks arpund for ~30 min for fire watch. Yall stay hydrated out there in this heat, stay safe, & have a great weekend!

Hope everyone has a great 4th of July! Make sure, regardless if in the woods or at a backyard BBQ, stay properly hydrated out there (heat injury doesn't discriminate between work and pleasure). Be aware of the signs of heat injury, how to treat. Yall stay safe out there!

We've noticed/heard of an increase in log truck rollovers in recent weeks in VA and other surrounding states. Below are a few ways to help reduce rollovers. We've seen some reports as high as 78% of log truck fatalities related to rollovers of which many are preventable (we understand many are related to other parties crossing line, which is why it's extremely important to run dash cams to help protect you, your driver, & business, show the true story as we know the media generally will not). Generally see an increase in accidents around holiday time due to more distracted drivers (generally more family members, friends, etc in vehicle as distractions in addition to cell phone use, under the influence, etc) on the road, increase in traffic, etc. Please caution your drivers to be extremely careful these next few days with the increased accident threat.

Extreme fire risk today/next few days in the region. Lower humidity, breezy (windy today), dry conditions make for prime fire conditions. Please keep units clean, make sure kill switch flipped at end of day (increase in preventable after hours electrical fires), fire watch conducted (someone on job for 30 min after shutdown) and make sure units parked safe distance away from each other to reduce fire spreading risk. Keep water source, multiple fire & cold fire extinguishers on site, especially if running chippers, blow down units more frequently, remove debris from around unit to reduce fire risk. Make sure everyone in your operarion knows your address in case of fire/medical emergency. Yall stay safe out there!
