Thoughtful Thursday

Does Your Spending Reflect What Matters Most to You?

It’s easy for money to disappear into everyday expenses without stopping to ask whether our spending actually reflects our priorities.

Take a look at where your money went last month. Does it line up with what you say matters most?

🏡 Providing for your family
🙏 Giving generously
💰 Building savings
📉 Reducing debt
🏖️ Preparing for retirement
❤️ Creating meaningful experiences
🌱 Leaving a legacy

A budget isn’t simply about spending less. It can help you intentionally direct your resources toward the things you value most.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
— Matthew 6:21 (ESV)

Your bank statement can tell a story. Make sure it’s telling the story you want it to tell.

Your life changed. Did your life insurance?

Life doesn’t stand still—and your financial responsibilities probably don’t either.

Maybe you’ve:

🏡 Bought a home
💍 Gotten married
👶 Welcomed a child
💼 Changed jobs or income
📈 Taken on additional financial responsibilities
🎓 Started planning for education expenses

These are all good reasons to review your life insurance coverage and ask an important question:

Does the coverage I purchased years ago still reflect what my family needs today?

Life insurance planning isn’t something you necessarily do once and forget. As your family, income, debts and goals change, your coverage needs may change too.

📖 “Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,” — Proverbs 27:23 (ESV)

Wise stewardship includes periodically reviewing what God has entrusted to us and planning carefully for those who depend on us.

Life changes. Make sure your coverage keeps up.

MEDICARE MONDAY

Turning 65? Your Medicare timeline starts before your birthday.

For many people who become eligible for Medicare at age 65, the Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window:

📅 3 months before the month you turn 65
🎂 The month you turn 65
📅 3 months after your birthday month

But not everyone should handle Medicare enrollment exactly the same way. If you’re already receiving Social Security, continuing to work, or covered by an employer health plan, different considerations may apply.

Waiting too long to understand your options could result in delayed coverage or, in some circumstances, late-enrollment penalties.

Don’t wait until your 65th birthday to start learning about Medicare.

Understanding your timeline ahead of time can give you more opportunity to evaluate your options and make an informed decision.

Turning 65 soon? Start by understanding when your Medicare enrollment window begins.

SOCIAL SECURITY SATURDAY

Just Because You Can Claim Social Security at 62 Doesn’t Mean You Should.

For many people, age 62 is the earliest they can begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits. But when you claim can have a lasting effect on your monthly benefit.

Claiming early generally means receiving a reduced monthly benefit. Waiting beyond your full retirement age can increase your monthly benefit through delayed retirement credits, up to age 70.

So instead of only asking:

“When can I start Social Security?”

Consider asking:

“When does Social Security make the most sense as part of my overall retirement plan?”

Your decision may depend on factors such as:

✅ Your retirement income needs
✅ Whether you plan to continue working
✅ Your health and longevity considerations
✅ Your spouse’s benefits
✅ Your savings and investments
✅ Your overall retirement strategy

There isn’t one filing age that’s right for everyone.

Social Security is a retirement planning decision—not just a birthday decision.

FINANCIAL FRIDAY

Give your Raise a Job

When income increases, spending often increases right along with it.

Before your next raise gets absorbed into everyday spending, consider giving some of those dollars a purpose.

You might:

💰 Increase retirement contributions
☔ Add to your emergency fund
💳 Accelerate debt repayment
🎓 Save toward another financial goal
❤️ Increase your giving

You can still enjoy some of your raise.

The key is deciding where the money will go before it simply becomes part of your lifestyle.

📖 “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance…”
— Proverbs 21:5 (ESV)

When your income goes up, consider letting your financial goals go up with it.
