For over 30 years, rarely did our family talk about my grandma having Alzheimer’s. It was part of her story that fell into the background.

These past few years, walking together with family in her memory has changed that. It’s opened up conversations and connected our family in ways we hadn’t been before.

When I see what this means to my aunt to honor her mom, I can feel how this walk has brought a part of my grandma's story back into the light.

What was once unspoken, has now become something that brings us closer together.

As part of what's become a 22-year tradition around the 4th of July, I took my son to the local carnival. After all these years, he's still a kid at heart and in many ways, cognitively, he always will be.

As parents of children with special needs, we often find ourselves focused so much on advocating and planning for their future that it's easy to overlook the wonderful moments right in front of us.

Seeing his excitement on the rides just like when he was little, reminded me that not all wealth shows up on a balance sheet or future planning. Some of the most meaningful transfers come in the form of simply being present and creating new memories.

"I wish I would've started sooner."

I hear that often from clients when it comes to investing – but it's not just about money. It applies to so many other areas of life.

As a board member of MERS Goodwill, I had the privilege of attending their Excel Center graduation last night. Surrounded by their family and friends, the adults earning their high school diploma came with great emotion and energy.

The determination and resilience of the graduates was inspiring. They proved that no matter the timeline, meaningful progress can be possible.

This experience is parallel to what I love about my work - helping clients pursue lives that surpass what they once thought possible.

As we start a new year, it's a great time to reflect on what truly matters. Whether it's saving for a dream trip, preparing for retirement, or building an emergency fund, small steps today can lead to possibilities that once seemed out of reach.

The holiday season can feel heavier when life is in transition.

For those going through a divorce, it's more than just a change in relationship status – it's a shift in finances, identity, and future plans.

I've had the privilege of supporting several clients through this emotionally and financially complex transition this past year.

Here's something I've seen firsthand – small, thoughtful steps forward often lead to clarity and confidence. It's not about having it all figured out at once. It's about knowing there's support when you need it.

If you or someone you know is navigating this season of life, I hope this message serves a reminder: you don't have to carry it alone, sometimes just knowing someone is in your corner makes all the difference.

Yesterday my family came together for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, a cause that has brought us closer.

Over 30 years have passed since my grandma, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, left us. All these years later, she’s now bringing our family together to help in the fight against this deadly disease.

Seeing so many families at the walk who share the same path was a powerful reminder that none of us are alone in this fight.

If you or someone you love has ever been impacted, know there is a whole community walking with you.

To celebrate Mother's Day, I had a wealth transfer conversation with a client today.

Over lunch, we shared the memories, wisdom and love that our mom's had shared with us while they were alive.

Not all wealth transfer plans include a dollar sign.

What are you including in your wealth transfer plan?

“See you at the top”

On a recent walk with my dad, these were his words as we would approach a hill.

He would then proceed to run while I would continue walking.

Even with my desire for a low impact workout, I still found it tempting to try and keep up with my dad.

It’s the same with our own financial journey. We can easily be tempted by what others are doing…even if they have different goals.

Knowing our own goals for the journey we're taking is an important first step.

A walk in the park with my dad was a nice reminder that there are multiple ways for each of us to get to the top.

In recent weeks, I’ve been having several conversations with parents of newborns who are running on fumes from lack of sleep.

These conversations reminded me of a recent interaction with my own 17-year-old daughter.

My daughter was listening to her favorite pop country play list in the kitchen when an older song from the 70’s started to play.

Surprised to hear it, I asked why that song is on her playlist.

Her response: “I love this song dad. Don’t you remember, you used to sing this to me.”

Of course I remembered, I just didn’t realize in all these years the impact because nothing was ever said about it.

So, to all those sleepy parents, keep being present and pouring in with love.

Whether it's a song or reading, your kids are listening.

Like investing, it may just take time to enjoy the rewards.

The saints came “rolling” in.

I was in my early 20’s when I was first introduced to Alzheimer’s. During visits with my grandma at the nursing home she was unable to recognize her own kids (my mom) and grandkids.

While she couldn’t recognize her family, she was able to sing in beautiful harmony “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Our visits turned into more song and dance than conversation.

Thirty years later, there’s still no cure. And now, through my role at Edward Jones working with families, I’m once again witnessing the impact of this disease.

In a first of its kind event, the Alzheimer’s Association held a “24 Hours for Alzheimer’s” car rally at WWT Raceway to raise awareness and money for research. I’m grateful for the thoughtfulness of several former Edward Jones General Partner’s for creating awareness to allow branch offices to participate or volunteer.

Surrounded by car lovers in my family, I love it when family, work and a great cause come together.

It happened again…

I said to my son Cameron, "I love you son."

Cameron's reply, "I like you too dad."

***

Cameron is going to be 20 in February. He has developmental disabilities and is on the autism spectrum. Cognitively, he's around a 1st grade level.

When he first replied to me this way a few years ago, I was a little taken aback he didn't reply in kind. Over time, I began to appreciate his unique way of expressing his love.

Those words now bring a smile to my face, and I look forward to hearing "I like you dad."

It's no different with your personal finances and life journey. A one-size fits all response may not apply to what matters most to you.

They say you regret the things you don't do in life more than the things you do. In 2016, after a long career in the sports industry, I was provided an amazing gift: the gift of unemployment.

I truly considered it a gift as it allowed me to re-imagine my career. It was exhilarating and scary all at once.

During my unemployment, it made me question everything I wanted out of my life and career. So much so, that I kept a list.
On that list, buried near the bottom, as if what I wrote had little significance, was a wish for my daughter:

"I want Emma to always have the courage to pursue her dreams."

The truth was though, it was so far down the list because it was the hardest thing for me to write. It hurt because I knew in that moment, I didn't have the courage to pursue mine.

Fast forward to today, I'm excited to announce that I am now ready to pursue my dreams and have joined Edward Jones as a Financial Advisor. I look forward to helping others achieve what's most important in their life!
