As experienced advisors retire and demand for holistic financial advice continues to grow, firms are looking for the next generation of planners to step in.

Current projections estimate the profession could face a shortage of nearly 100,000 advisors by 2034.

This means there is real opportunity for people who are willing to build the technical skills, develop strong client relationships, and commit to doing this work well.

If you're considering a career in financial planning, there's never been a more important time to enter the profession. The need is real and so is the opportunity!

If you're considering a career helping people with money, you've probably noticed there are a lot of titles to sort through.

Financial coach. Financial planner. CFP® professional. Financial advisor.

The good news? There isn't just one way to build a meaningful career in this profession.

Some people are drawn to behavioral finance and helping clients change habits. Others love the technical complexity of retirement, taxes, and comprehensive planning. And increasingly, many professionals find themselves somewhere in the middle.

Because the truth is, great financial planning often requires great coaching.

Which path sounds most like you?

We just wrote a whole blog on the difference between financial planning vs. financial coaching. Take a peek if you're curious!

For the first time ever, retirement funding has overtaken investment growth as the #1 concern for clients.

Obviously, you could argue that these are two sides of the same coin. But the shift in language matters.

Clients used to come in asking: "How do I grow what I have?" Now, though, they're asking: "Will I actually be okay?"

Those are very different conversations.

When someone is worried about retirement, they're often thinking about much more than a portfolio. They're thinking about healthcare costs, Social Security timing, taxes, longevity, and whether the future they've imagined is still possible.

Today's clients are looking for a planner who can help them navigate both the technical complexity and the emotional weight that comes with those questions.

For anyone entering the profession right now, this matters.

The planners who will be most needed over the next decade won't just understand retirement income planning. They'll know how to sit across from someone in uncertainty and help them move forward with clarity and confidence.

That's the work.

There isn't just one way to become a financial planner.

For some, investment management is really ideal. For others, they want to offer comprehensive planning without managing client assets.

That's called advice-only planning (or sometimes fee-for-service planning), and this model continues to grow.

It's creating new opportunities for planners who love the relationship and planning side of the work. pPerhaps most importantly, it's a reminder that this profession is broader and more flexible than many people realize!

You built the right plan. The client agreed to it. And then... nothing happened.

This is one of the most common and least-talked-about realities in financial planning.

You did your job well, the plan was right, and the client was happy. But they didn't take action on their pieces, and you don't know what to do next.

Here's what most planners eventually figure out: People don't struggle to follow through because they don't understand the plan. They struggle because change is hard, because life gets in the way, or because the urgency that existed in the meeting room fades the moment they walk out of it.

Great planners don't respond to this with a lecture on accountability. Instead, they get curious. They ask what got in the way, they break the first step down smaller, they check in sooner than they planned to, and/or they make it easier to start than to avoid starting.

The goal isn't compliance. It's momentum! Sometimes the most valuable thing a planner can do is help a client take one small step — not the whole plan, just the next thing.

If the idea of "selling" or "business development" feel uncomfortable, you're in good company.

Most people don't become financial planners because they want to be salespeople. They become planners because they want to help people make better financial decisions.

The good news is that the skills that make someone a great planner are often the same skills that make prospect conversations feel natural.

Listening well, communicating clearly, building trust, following through... Those aren't sales tactics! They're relationship-building skills.

Swipe through for three ways to make prospect conversations feel more confident and authentic.

When people talk about AI in financial planning, the conversation usually focuses on whether it will replace planners.

A more interesting question might be whether it changes how planners are hired and at what level.

Many of the tasks AI can help with today, like research, meeting preparation, note-taking, and follow-up, have traditionally been where new planners learned the foundations of the profession.

Those tasks weren't just administrative work. They were opportunities to build judgment, recognize patterns, understand client situations, and learn how planning actually happens.

AI can absolutely make firms more efficient, but as the profession evolves, it's worth asking how we continue creating opportunities for new planners to gain experience, develop confidence, and grow into advisor-level roles.

The future of financial planning needs both: better technology and strong pathways for the next generation of planners.

Getting busy is exciting.

It usually means your work is resonating, clients are referring people your way, and the career you've been building is starting to take shape.

It also means the administrative side of planning shows up fast.

Meeting prep, meeting notes, follow-ups, action items.... Without a system, those tasks can quickly take time away from the work that matters most.

A few things that help:

1️⃣ Build workflows before you need them. Create simple processes for meeting preparation, follow-up, and tracking action items.

2️⃣ Use AI thoughtfully. It can save time, but it captures what was said... not always what it meant. Also remember: it's not always right!

3️⃣ Protect the habits that earned clients' trust in the first place: curiosity, follow-through, and the ability to slow down when something important comes up.

As your client list grows, those qualities don't scale automatically. You have to build your practice around them intentionally.

One of the biggest challenges for new planners is finding opportunities to see what it really looks like to be in the room with clients.

That's why we built CORE.

Inside, you'll find nearly 60 courses built around real client meetings, real planning conversations, and real-world complexity. You'll also earn 50 CFP Board experience hours per course, join live coaching sessions, and learn alongside a community of planners who are working to build their skills and confidence.

Whether you're a student, career changer, or early-career planner, CORE was designed to help bridge the gap between learning financial planning and actually doing it.
