A net worth statement is simple: add up everything you own, like savings, investments, home equity, and retirement accounts. Then you subtract everything you owe, like your mortgage, loans, debt.
What's left is your net worth.
Most people treat that number as a scoreboard, or the ultimate measure of how they're doing financially.
But here's what it doesn't tell you: whether your money is actually doing anything meaningful.
It doesn't tell you whether the things you say matter to you are showing up in your spending. It doesn't say whether you'll look back and feel like it was well used.
73% of Americans say a solid financial plan is what would actually make them financially happy.

Back in 2015, Hannah wrote a short post about adding one line to your net worth statement: Where your money actually took you.
We've updated that idea on the blog this week to include today's research, and with more questions that help you see how your money supports your life!
