The average US rent just hit $3,000 a month.
And landlords expect tenants to make 3x the rent to qualify.

Do that math real quick.

$3,000 in rent means proving $9,000 a month in income just to get approved for the lease. That's $108,000 a year. Before taxes.

The median household income in America is around $74,000 a year.

So the average American family doesn't qualify for the average American apartment.

Read that again.

And it gets worse.

There isn't a single state, city, or county in the entire country where a full time minimum wage worker can afford a modest two bedroom apartment at fair market rent.

To make those numbers work on minimum wage a worker would need to clock nearly 116 hours every single week just to cover housing costs.

There are only 168 hours in a week.

This isn't a math problem anymore. It's a CRISIS that's been building in slow motion for a decade and has now fully arrived.

The people being squeezed aren't lazy. They're not making bad decisions. Working full time jobs, sometimes two of them, and still watching the gap between earnings and housing costs grow wider every single year.

Rents climbed nearly 30% over the last four years in many markets.

Wages didn't come close to keeping pace. And the 3x income requirement that became standard across the rental market was designed for a world where rents were half what they are today.

Nobody updated the formula. They just kept raising the rent.

Housing affordability isn't a niche policy issue.

It's the foundation EVERYTHING else in personal finance gets built on.

And right now that foundation is cracked for millions of Americans who did nothing wrong.
