General Liability with Pollution combined policies-how much do they vary from carrier to carrier-I've had many conversations with clients about this topic recently, so putting out some informative insight.
The combined form GL & Pollution policy you have is much different than what you find in the admitted market (standard Commercial General Liability). Admitted carriers use standardized ISO form language and as such, these policies all read almost identical, with the same language, coverage forms, and exclusions.
The non-admitted carriers who write your GL/CPL (contractor's pollution) policy- they do not adhere to the same standardization. As a result, the coverage form language, the definitions (ie. what is a pollutant), exclusions and limitations on coverage regarding certain business operations all vary a great deal among the carriers who offer these policies.
Many times, I'm the one going into detail and explaining these differences to my own clients- because they deserve to be told and informed of how these differences affect their business. It's extremely rare that in insured tells me their agent went over these differences and explained what the exclusion or sublimit actually meant regarding their policy coverage.
Knowledge is power. The more knowledgeable your agent is, the more knowledgeable you are. You deserve to know exactly what you are buying, not just with insurance, with everything.
