The Fed made its first rate cut in more than four years and it’s a big one, slashing rates by half a percentage point.

What does this mean for the mortgage industry? Mortgage rates typically drop ahead of a rate cut- and they did - dropping to the lowest levels of the year earlier this month. Because mortgage rates are tied to the bond market, federal rate cuts don’t provide instant relief but can positively impact mortgage rates in the long run. Those with credit cards, home equity loans and car loans may see immediate impact since that debt is directly tied to the Fed’s prime rate.

The signal is that inflation may finally be on track to getting down to 2%. More rate cuts ahead mean even more potential to see people sell that have been hesitant to do so because of the extremely low rate that they have on their current mortgage.
