August underscored how quickly wildfire risk can become reality in Northern Nevada. Multiple fast-moving fires burned tens of thousands of acres, displaced residents, and highlighted the importance of proactive preparation for homeowners and property owners.
Living With Fire (LWF), a program of the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, provides Nevada residents with practical, research-based resources to reduce wildfire risk around homes and communities. LWF supports homeowners, educators, community groups, and firefighting professionals with guidance on defensible space, home hardening, vegetation management, and evacuation readiness.
LWF is hosting a public Zoom webinar focused on the basics of defensible space and retrofitting homes for wildfire. Participants will learn how to identify the most vulnerable areas around a structure and actionable strategies to mitigate those risks, including:
- Creating and maintaining defensible space zones (0–5 ft, 5–30 ft, and beyond)
- Using fire-resistant landscaping and hardscaping
- Hardening homes with ember-resistant vents, roofing, siding, and decking
- Keeping roofs, gutters, and decks clear of combustible debris
