With SpaceX moving toward an IPO in the coming weeks, Anthropic filing confidentially this week, and OpenAI and Databricks potentially not far behind, 2026 is shaping up to be a notably active year for IPOs.

For employees and early shareholders, the headlines tend to overshadow a more practical question: what happens to your position once the shares are actually tradable?

A stake that was illiquid and relatively stable becomes subject to public-market volatility and shifting sentiment, often with uncertain valuations early on. That's a meaningfully different risk profile than a private holding, and it's worth thinking through before the window opens rather than after.

Two questions come up often:

• How do you hedge a highly appreciated position heading into an IPO?
• Is there a tax-efficient way to diversify?

An IPO is a transition, not a finish line. There's rarely a single right answer – keeping the position, diversifying gradually, or creating liquidity all involve real tradeoffs that depend on your goals, tax situation, and broader financial picture.

We're already working through these questions with employees and shareholders heading into 2026. The planning that matters most happens before the lockup lifts, not after.

Different types of investments involve varying degrees of risk, and there can be no assurance that any specific investment will be profitable or suitable for a particular investor's financial situation or risk tolerance.
