“FORECLOSURES UP 42%!”
Well, that’ll get your attention while you’re drinking your coffee. 😳☕
But before we announce the return of 2008, let’s read past the headline.
ATTOM reported 5,794 bank repossessions in August 2026, up 42% from August last year.
That increase is real. It deserves attention.
So does the bigger picture.
Annual bank repossessions:
2010: 1,050,500
2019: 143,955
2025: 46,439
The 2025 total was roughly 96% below the 2010 peak.
And here’s another detail worth understanding:
“Foreclosure filings” includes default notices, scheduled auctions AND bank repossessions.
Those describe different stages of the process. A default notice doesn’t mean the bank has already taken the house.
Now, losing a home is a crisis for the person losing it. I’m not making light of that.
But a national housing-crash prediction needs more evidence than a scary percentage.
Up from what?
Over what period?
Which measurement?
And what’s happening locally?
Those are the questions I want answered before somebody uses a headline to make a major financial decision.
After 21 years in mortgages, I’ve learned that panic makes a lousy financial advisor.
So does blind optimism.
Let’s look at your actual situation and make a plan that leaves room for things to go differently than expected.
