Am I the only one who thinks portable mortgages sound better than they might actually work? 👀🏡
The proposed MOVE Act (Making Ownership Viable for Everyone Act) would potentially allow qualifying homeowners to transfer their existing mortgage rate, terms AND remaining loan balance to a new home. (GovInfo)
And yes… keeping that 3% mortgage rate sounds AMAZING.
But here’s the part I think people are overlooking:
👉 You’re potentially moving your remaining mortgage balance — not magically financing your entire new house at your old rate.
So if you owe $250,000 but want to buy a $600,000 home… we still have to figure out how you’re financing the difference.
Could portable mortgages help some homeowners finally feel comfortable selling? Absolutely.
Do I think the MOVE Act, by itself, is going to suddenly unlock the entire housing market?
I’m skeptical. 😬
And one VERY important detail: this is currently proposed legislation — it is NOT law yet. (GovInfo)
Would being able to take your current mortgage rate with you actually make YOU move?
👇 Tell me your current rate and whether you’d consider selling if you could keep it.
