AG-RELATED BOOKS GIVEN TO 3 LOCAL SCHOOLS!

To celebrate National Agriculture Day, March 24, Montgomery County Farm Bureau board members presented two books of the year. “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” is written by Peggy Thomas and is the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture’s 18th ‘book of the year’ (2025). “I Love Blueberries” is written by Shannon Anderson and is the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture’s 19th ‘book of the year’ (2026).
The first book includes Jackie and her garden friends as they discover the wonders of gardening, soil secrets, and the magic of composting. They embrace the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting their own food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the magical cycle of growth and sustainability continues anew.
In book two, young readers will learn how classmates create a plan and work together to not only grow blueberries but also develop new friendships. They convince the community to help them set up a hydroponics growing station. It includes facts about blueberry nutrition.
Both books and the educator guides are given to three elementary schools in the county. They will be available in the libraries at Red Oak, Stanton, and Villisca schools.
The “Book of the Year” award comes from the Foundation’s effort to identify ‘Accurate Ag Books’, a collection of 500 books for children, teens, and adults that accurately cover ag topics. Book of the Year selections are educational, help create positive public perceptions about agriculture, inspire readers to learn more, touch their readers’ lives, and tell the farmer’s story. The Accurate Ag Books database is available at the http://www.agfoundation.org/recommended-pubs website.

Farm Bureau contributes to local food pantries!

In recognition of National Agriculture Day, March 24, Montgomery County Farm Bureau gave donation checks to five food pantries in the county. This helps provide food for community members in need this spring, while honoring the farmers who help supply that food.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY OFFERS THREE SCHOLARSHIPS

New for 2026, Montgomery County Farm Bureau is offering three college scholarships of $750 each. The increased amount was approved at the November board meeting. The scholarships are given to three high school students to further their education at college or technical school next year. This is the 27th year for the Montgomery County Farm Bureau local scholarship program.

To be eligible, the student must be a child of a Montgomery County Farm Bureau member, or a member themselves. He or she needs to be entering college for the first time. An expected high school graduation date must take place by spring of 2026. High school GPA is required to be 2.5 or above.

County scholarships are not renewable. They are payable to the college at the start of the second semester, after proof of first semester completion and a 2.0 minimum grade average.

To save students time, Montgomery County will use the same application as the Iowa Farm Bureau scholarship, thus filling it out only once. Both will have the same deadline due date of Wednesday, Jan. 28. County rules are slightly different in two ways. Scholarship funds can go to more than tuition (books, room and board, or lab fees) and a student does not have to go into an ag-related field.

High school guidance counselors in the county have the application and rules, as well as the link to apply. Details are offered at the Farm Bureau office in Red Oak or call 712-623-5546. There is a link to fill out online through the www.iowafarmbureau.com website.

Additionally, students are reminded that Iowa Farm Bureau will award 27 seniors from across Iowa a $2,500 state scholarship this spring that is renewable. Iowa Farm Bureau only accepts ‘online’ applications. Go to the www.iowafarmbureau.com/Member-Benefits/Iowa-Farm-Bureau-Scholarships website for eligibility and guidelines. Next, click on the green ‘Apply Now’ button at the bottom of the page. Deadline is Jan. 28, including all documents required.

The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) and many of its 100 county Farm Bureaus offer a variety of scholarships at the state (IFBF) and local level to future college students.
