It's Fed week! Our President and Chief Investment Officer Patrick Healey appeared on the Schwab Network's Trading 360 segment again this morning from the floor of the NYSE. We always enjoy the chance to catch up with Nicole Petallides to provide commentary on this week's Fed meeting, and the market's expectations for rate cuts for the remainder of the year.

In several of his recent media interviews, our President and Chief Investment Officer Patrick Healey pointed out how the Fed has leaned on monthly jobs data to justify continuing its restrictive stance on interest rate policy, while essentially ignoring the revisions that followed the next month. This morning's report that lowered revisions of jobs created over the last 12 months not only highlights the inaccuracy of the data estimates, but also the flaws to the Fed relying on that data to set interest rate policy.

We suspect that much like the Fed was late to raise rates during the periods of peak inflation, they are now playing catch up to lower them to stave off recessionary pressures. The more accommodative interest rate policy should benefit risk assets, like stocks, real estate and crypto, over the next 12 months, and reduce borrowing costs for millions of Americans, but it remains to be seen how the elevated rates over the last 2 years will impact productivity and job growth going forward.

The Labor Department issued revised figures for the 12 months through March that point to greater economic fragility.
