Congratulations Mr Gostlin!
Congratulations to Barrie Gostlin for being a finalist for the Hillsdale County Teacher of the Year!!!
Barrie is an Industrial Arts teacher from Reading Community Schools.
With 7 years of teaching experience, Barrie has taught courses in
social studies and history but his passion and specialization lies in
Woodshop.
Barrie is a passionate, energetic and authentic educator. Students
enter his classroom with a desire to learn in a nontraditional way but
they leave with a new skill and the knowledge that Mr. Gostlin cared
about them. In his various nominations, his students spoke of his
kindness, compassion and his willingness to support them in and
outside the classroom.
When the decision was made to bring back the Industrial Arts program
to RHS, they realized that the cost would be a major challenge. In an
effort to assist with that concern, Barrie partnered with the Reading
City Manager to identify ways to showcase the program and garner
support from the community. This conversation led to his students
participating in Reading Festival Days talking about their experience in
the program and selling small projects as a means of fundraising.
That partnership led to more community projects allowing his students
to build displays for several community events and the opportunity to
update a handicap ramp for a local resident. While giving his
students skills, Barrie has allowed them opportunities to use those
skills to impact their community.
In his application, Barrie wrote, “Any teacher that is worth their salt
cares more about the men and women their students will become than
the grades their students earn. Most teachers do their job well, but it
is the teachers that genuinely care for their students that have the
greatest impact.
Thank you Barrie for being one of those teachers.
