Fun Fact: West Virginia became the 35th state on June 20, 1863, and is the only state created by separating from a Confederate state during the Civil War.

State of Emergency Declared for Jefferson County, West Virginia

Charles Town, WV (January 24, 2026) – Jefferson County Commission President Pasha Majdi has declared a Local State of Emergency in preparation for Winter Storm Fern.

This declaration enables county agencies, emergency services, and community partners to mobilize resources more rapidly to address anticipated storm-related conditions across Jefferson County. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution, limit travel when possible, and follow all guidance from local and state officials.

An emergency evacuation shelter is now open at:
Ranson Civic Center
432 W. Second Avenue
Ranson, WV 25438

The shelter will remain open continuously until noon on Monday, January 26, 2026. The American Red Cross operates the shelter in partnership with local community organizations.
