A $5.5 MILLION house… that no longer exists. And now the homeowner wants the mortgage wiped away. 😳

A retired attorney purchased a $5.5M cliffside home in Cape Cod in 2021. The property was facing serious coastal erosion, and by early 2025, the home had to be demolished because it was at risk of falling into the ocean.

Now, he’s suing JPMorgan Chase in an attempt to void the roughly $3.85 million mortgage, alleging that he was experiencing a manic episode at the time of the purchase and lacked the capacity to enter into the loan. JPMorgan Chase has denied the allegations.

And listen—there are real legal and mental-health questions for the court to sort through here.

But from a lender’s perspective… are we serious?! 😭 At some point, we also have to talk about accountability for the financial decisions we make.

You bought the house. You signed the documents. You made the payments for nearly three years.
