This is probably my favorite part of Mentor Morning.

Sitting down with business owners, hearing what they’re building, and helping them think through the financial side of making it work.

Yesterday at The Junction, powered by Innovate Carolina, I had conversations with entrepreneurs at different stages of business. Some had specific bookkeeping questions. Others were thinking about what they need to put in place now so they’re better prepared as they grow.

And sometimes a 15 or 20-minute conversation is enough to help someone see their next step a little more clearly.

I really enjoy being able to have these conversations and share some of what I’ve learned over the years.

Last week I got to step away from my desk and do something I really enjoy: talk bookkeeping with business owners.

It was the Bookkeeping 101 workshop at The Junction (Powered by Innovate Carolina) on the UNC campus in Chapel Hill, and we spent the hour talking about the numbers business owners should actually be paying attention to and what those numbers can tell you about your business.

After more than 20 years in bookkeeping and running my own bookkeeping agency, I can tell you that a lot of business owners are doing great work and bringing in revenue, but still aren’t completely sure what they’re looking at when they open their financial reports.

That’s one of the reasons I enjoy teaching this stuff.

You don’t have to become a bookkeeper. But if you own a business, you should be able to look at your numbers and understand what they’re telling you.

Thank you to everyone who came out, asked questions, and spent their lunch hour with me. And thank you to The Junction and Innovate Carolina for giving me the opportunity to share a little of what I’ve learned over the years.

What a great morning at Mentor Morning at The Junction, powered by Innovate Carolina.

It was wonderful meeting so many entrepreneurs, business owners, students, and members of the local community. Every conversation was different, but they all had one thing in common: people looking for practical ways to build stronger businesses.

I had the opportunity to answer questions about bookkeeping, financial organization, cash flow, and understanding business numbers. I also enjoyed connecting with fellow mentors and the incredible team that made the event possible.

A big thank you to Julia Lutz for the invitation and to Kimberly Yingling, Concetta Rand, and the entire Junction team for creating such a welcoming space for meaningful conversations. It was great seeing so many people taking advantage of the opportunity to learn, network, and support one another.

And a quick shout-out to Meantime Coffee for keeping everyone fueled throughout the morning.
