Winter Storm Preparation Guide
Before the storm
Protect your pipes:
• Insulate pipes in unheated areas (attic, crawl spaces,
garage) with foam pipe insulation or heat tape
• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and water
systems
• Shut off exterior faucet valves and drain lines
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to
circulate
• Let faucets drip slightly when temperatures drop
below freezing
• Install leak detectors and shutoff valves
• Know where main shut-off valve is located
Pool preparation:
• Lower water level below skimmer in pools
• Cover pool securely
• Drain water from pumps, filters, heaters and
chlorinators
• Insulate exposed pipes and equipment with foam
covers or insulation tape
Prepare for Power Outages
• Charge phones and portable chargers
• Have flashlights and batteries ready (avoid using
candles and never leave them unattended)
• If you have a well, fill bathtub with water for flushing
toilet in case you lose power to well pump
• If using a generator, operate it OUTSIDE ONLY at least
20 feet from your home
Stock Essentials
• Water: 3 gallons per person
• Non-perishable food that doesn’t require cooking
(canned goods, protein bars, crackers)
• Baby formula and diapers
• Pet food
• Medications
• First aid kit
After the storm
• Inspect property for frozen or burst pipes: look for
bulging walls, strange sounds, or water stains
• If a pipe is frozen or burst, shut off water immediately
and call a plumber
• Check roof, gutters, and siding for ice damage
• Document ALL damage with photos before making
repairs for insurance claims
