Shark in the water!!!

During a recent family vacation to St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands, I was curious about the economic profile of the island. Interestingly, according to 2020 U.S Census data, the median family income in St. Thomas is approximately $67,000. For comparison, the U.S. median household income was about $67,500 in 2020.

However, life in paradise is more expensive. The cost of living in St. Thomas is about 30% higher than in the U.S. Why? Imported food, goods, higher utility costs, limited housing and transportation and shipping costs to get everything there.

Is there a lesson here? Yes, of course! Your income and expenses will be highly dependent on where you live. These data points and so much more will impact your financial plan. Think hard about what 'paradise' means to you.

As for the shark, it's hard to see, but yes, it's real…a scary sight when you're about to get in the water!
