--The Foxhole Test

Bullets may not be flying where you work. And that's a good thing!

But...when others' livelihoods, income, opportunities, goals and dreams are at stake, those priorities carry life-changing impact that are just as important as on the battlefield.

When I served in the , I called it The Foxhole Test: if bullets were literally flying, who would I want in my foxhole?

You might be surprised to learn that it was not based on rank, experience, age or physical strength. Nope.

Here were the qualities that mattered the most:

--Kept their word
--Hard-working
--Dependable
--Can Do attitude
--Squared Away (professional)
--Saw the Solution, not just the problem
--Always Learning

Does that describe you? Do others want you in their foxhole, when it really counts?

Take a moment and reflect on what others have shared with you, especially those with no skin in the game, who do not directly benefit from your efforts. What do they say about you?

If you really want to know, ask someone who believes in you, who truly cares for you, who's a truth teller, for their .

You are, or can be, the person others would "bet their life on." Always strive to be this kind of person and professional. You'll be glad you did!

--The one giving the orders---they're the leader, right?

Most often, they're not. Early in my professional career, I equated giving orders, being in charge, title & role as . Boy! Was I wrong!

John Maxwell says that leadership is , pure and simple. Agreed!

When I reflect on my experiences in the , both as a and as a of soldiers, it's easy to spot the . They could soldiers to do the stuff nobody liked doing. They always included themselves in those undesirable tasks. And they kept .

Sadly, too many soldiers in leadership roles relied on their rank to get results.

Here was my biggest takeaway: , not Rank or Role.

—Karma is a B****

You can’t treat people atrociously without it coming back on you. That’s not an opinion; that’s a fact. Whether the blowback is felt soon after or many years down the road, we always reap what we’ve sown. Some call it , , , etc.

In the picture below, I’m standing on the top balcony of one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces in Baghdad. While the view facing out is cool, if the camera were rotated, you would see devastating destruction from multiple bomb hits to this one-time beautiful edifice.

Every time we took the trip up hundreds of steps on curved marble staircases to reach the top floor, I would imagine how breathtaking the palace was in its heyday.

Now filled with rubble, dust, bird droppings and trash, it served as a stark reminder that I must never value over , over .

Don't be distracted or deluded by others’ opulence. If it was gained at the expense of others, relationships or their , it wasn’t worth the price.

, , be , be about others—you will be rewarded richly…..in the ways that matter the most and last for lifetimes.

We're to be living at a time in history where more can start and a business than ever before.
