Seems like a simple question doesn’t it? If you have employees you have to carry Workers Compensation and if you don’t you shouldn’t have to, right? Sort of. If you are a general contractor that uses subcontractors it may be a good idea to have coverage in place. The problem arises if you have a subcontractor who may have no coverage or had coverage and the policy cancelled and his employees if he has them now have no coverage. If there is any injury to one of your subcontractors employees you, as the general contractor, will be held responsible in most cases.

What do you need to know when hiring a subcontractor? There are many answers to that I'm sure but as an insurance agent I will tell you one of the first things you should do is make sure they have liability insurance. If you are a general contractor and have insurance there will be a paragraph in your policy that says your subs need to carry their own and name you as additional insured. [ 111 more words ]
