Let's talk versus .

What's the difference, and do you need one-- or both-- when buying a home? A prequalification is a rough estimate of what you can afford, provided by your loan officer, based on documentation that you send. It is a good first step in your mortgage journey!

A preapproval is a more "official" option, where you submit a mortgage application along with additional documentation, and a conditional commitment (in writing) is then given to you by your loan officer. A preapproval, if you choose to get prequalified is usually the second step in a mortgage process.
