For National Boss’s Day, we’re thinking about a concept that our President and EVP, Tod and Vicki O’Dowd, introduced to the team: “You bring the weather.” It’s the idea that the attitudes we carry, the words we choose, and the energy we bring shape our environment.

And the weather that Tod and Vicki bring? They create an atmosphere where people feel supported, trusted, and cared for. No matter the challenges we face, large or small, Tod and Vicki remain steadfast and positive, supporting us through any storm.

To show our appreciation, we presented Tod and Vicki with a book filled with heartfelt messages from our team, along with an engraved barometer. Their leadership and guidance impact us every day. The personal touches and care that Avery is known for? It starts with Tod and Vicki.

Welcome to Avery, Tom!

Tom Parrott joins Avery as our new Associate Claims Advisor in Portsmouth. With 26 years of claims experience, including 18 years as an Independent Adjuster, Tom embodies the Avery way: being a real advocate for our clients, not just a 1-800 number.

Most recently, Tom spent three and a half years on Auto-Owners Insurance’s North Regional Catastrophe Team. He spent about 200 days a year in the field, averaging nearly three appointments a day on 21-day deployments across seven states. He responded to severe hail events as well as Hurricane Idalia in Georgia (2023) and Hurricane Helene in North Carolina (2024).

Tom’s approach is hands-on and personal. He spent about three hours at each property, meeting policyholders in person; inspecting roofs, exteriors, interiors, and personal property; reviewing coverage; presenting repair estimates; and issuing payments on site. He guided people through the whole claim, from first payment to last. Tom believes listening to each person’s story is the heart of real advocacy, and that recovery is a shared effort among first responders, neighbors, nonprofits, insurers, and contractors.

Tom has called the Seacoast home since 1980 and holds adjuster licenses in New Hampshire, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Outside of work, he and his family love to travel. Mount Desert Island, Key West, Spain, and South Africa are among their favorite places. At home in Durham, they’re joined by their cat, Pickle.

We’re so glad to have Tom on the team. When the unexpected happens, he’s one more reason you’ll never navigate a claim alone.

Some events come with more moving parts than others. When the Brazilian Lacrosse Federation brought an Olympic Training Camp to Brewster Academy, Karyn worked through international requirements and cross-border coordination to have their event and liability coverage in place on time.

Teeing off for a cause. 🏌🏻‍♂️

Tod had a wonderful day participating in the Prescott Park Arts Festival Inaugural Golf Tournament at the Abenaqui Country Club earlier this week.

As a downtown Portsmouth business, we look forward to the Prescott Park Arts Festival every summer. We’re proud to support such an incredible organization that offers affordable, accessible arts and entertainment to our city.

It was a beautiful fall morning, and our Avery foursome tried their hand at the “Longest Drive” and “Beat the Pro” competitions throughout the course, plus other contests. We hope the tournament becomes an annual tradition and that we see everyone again next year!

Founded in 1899. Still here, and still independent.

That describes both Avery Insurance and Big I NH, the New Hampshire Association of Independent Insurance Agents. As Big I members, the association has been a longtime resource for Avery and our clients.

This year, Jaimie and Suno represented our team at Big I NH’s 127th annual convention. The convention unites independent insurance providers from across the state, with panels and presentations that explore what’s shaping insurance in New Hampshire and nationwide today.

Staying informed is part of how we advise our clients, and our membership with Big I is integral to it. Until next year!

After 26 years with Avery, Karyn Vander Hey deserved a proper send-off.

The whole team gathered at Black Rock Social Club to celebrate her retirement with games, good food, and plenty of stories. As our Senior Commercial Risk Specialist, Karyn built lasting relationships with her clients through deep expertise and a personal approach.

Her last day is October 1st. Thank you, Karyn, for everything. We will miss you!

Meet Tim, a longtime member of our Commercial Insurance team and a trusted advisor to contractors across New England.

Tim brings a unique perspective to his work, with experience spanning insurance, high-end residential real estate development, and strategic sales and marketing. As a contractor specialist, he draws on that background to understand the industry's complexities and help his clients navigate risk with confidence.

Tim holds an Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI) designation, as well as real estate licenses in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He’s also a private pilot, an avid golfer, skier, cyclist, and a former collegiate basketball player!
