You can't prompt your way to a successful retirement.

To be fair, AI is incredibly useful for the initial stages of financial research. It acts like a highly efficient research assistant that can explain complicated subjects on demand.

But when it comes to actual wealth management, it has a major limitation: it only knows what you tell it.

A chatbot can't evaluate your family dynamics, understand your emotional relationship with risk, or coordinate a multigenerational estate plan with your CPA and estate attorney. It can't build a dynamic tax withdrawal strategy that accounts for real-world life changes, and it doesn't hold any legal or fiduciary responsibility for the accuracy of its calculations.

Seemingly sound plans built on incomplete (or inaccurate) information fail in practice. Having an experienced financial advisor in your corner remains the best way to navigate the nuances of complex wealth planning.

Divorce affects the obvious things: the house, the retirement accounts, the savings. It also affects some things people don't think about until later.

If a marriage lasted at least 10 years, you may be eligible for Social Security benefits based on your ex-spouse's work record, and claiming them doesn't reduce what your ex receives.

Gina Jacobson, CFP®, CDFA, shares one of the details that people often miss. Other eligibility requirements apply, so it's worth reviewing your own situation.

Medicare is comprehensive, but it contains gaps that can impact your long-term independence.

For women, these planning variables are particularly notable. Living longer on average typically means planning for years of out-of-pocket health expenses that original Medicare does not cover.

When you look at the details, the exclusions are significant:
→ Long-Term Custodial Care: Assisted living facilities and nursing homes are not covered by Medicare. This is often a substantial expense families face in later years.
→ Routine Vision, Dental, and Hearing: Daily essentials like cleanings, root canals, eye exams, and hearing aids are entirely out-of-pocket under original Medicare.
→ Daily Support at Home: Personal care assistance for daily tasks is not covered unless you also require active, skilled nursing care.
→ Prescriptions and Travel: Outpatient drugs require separate private insurance policies, and medical care received outside the United States is generally not covered.

Over a retirement that spans decades, these out-of-pocket expenses can strain a portfolio if they are not factored into your cash-flow projections.

We start every client relationship the same way: by listening.

We listen to understand what someone is working toward, what they're navigating, and what a successful outcome looks like for them.

Medicare comes with a lot of moving parts, and the paperwork is a lot to decipher.

On Wednesday, September 16, Heidi Dulay of Willamette Valley Benefits joins us on Zoom to walk through how the pieces fit together and what's worth reviewing before enrollment opens in October. Heidi has been helping Oregon families sort through Medicare since 2007, and she has a way of making a confusing subject feel manageable.

She'll leave time for questions at the end, and nothing is too basic to ask.

This webinar is open to everyone, so please pass it along to anyone who could benefit from a clearer picture.

Your portfolio was built with a specific mix in mind, and after a volatile stretch, that mix can drift. Client Relationship Manager Matthew Sheets, CFP®, explains what to check and why context matters more than the number on your statement.

If you give to charity regularly, a donor-advised fund (DAF) may be one of the most underutilized tools in your financial plan.

Here's how it works: you contribute assets to the fund, take the tax deduction in the year of the contribution, and then recommend grants to the charities of your choice. The assets in the fund can be invested and grow tax-free in the meantime.

For donors who give to multiple organizations, have a high-income year they want to offset, or hold appreciated securities they'd rather not sell outright, a DAF can accomplish a lot at once.

If this hasn't been part of your planning process, we'd be glad to walk through whether it makes sense for your situation: https://go.vcmi.net/consult-schedule
