Use extra caution when selling and buying items on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist.
💰 If an item’s price is way below market value, this could be a sign of a scam.
🚩 Do not pay for anything ahead of time. Always wait until you are in possession of the item and can validate the quality and condition before handing over cash or paying via a cash transfer app (PayPal, Venmo, etc).
📧 When selling items, you do not need a business account to receive funds for a sale via PayPal or Venmo. A common Marketplace scam tactic involves potential buyers asking for your email or phone number. They will then use this to contact you posing as one of these companies, requesting you send them funds to set up a business account to get paid for the sale.
📝 Also, when selling items, avoid accepting checks as payment when possible. This prevents the possibility of receiving bad or falsified checks from buyers. Instead, we recommend accepting cash (or cash transfer app with confirmation of payment) at the time the buyer picks up the product.
