Medicare Advantage members may retain coverage through a new agreement with a national carrier, while Medicaid and Medicare supplemental plans are being evaluated for transfer to other organizations
Reason for Exit
Providence cited rising healthcare costs, tougher state and federal regulations, and competition from larger national insurers as key factors making it difficult for a regional nonprofit plan to operate sustainably .
Affected Members
Oregon: Approximately 421,000 members
Other states: About 19,000 members in Washington, California, and Montana
Medicaid: Roughly 58,000 low-income Oregonians will be transitioned to other organizations
Transition Guidance
Providence will honor all existing contracts with employers and members through 2026 and provide resources to help members find new coverage for 2027
Continued Access to Care
Providence hospitals and clinics will remain open and accessible through other insurance networks, ensuring patients can continue seeing their doctors even after the insurance plans end
Key Takeaway
Providence Health Plan’s exit marks a significant change in Oregon’s insurance landscape, requiring members to plan ahead for 2027 coverage.
I will be closely following doctor, facility & network changes for the smoothest possible transitions for my clients when Open Enrollment begins November 1st.
