This morning we participated in the Lamb Starter Program for our county’s 4-h program. Kids of all ages that have never shown a lamb at the fair got to select an animal to take home and raise for a 4-h project. We are really excited for the showman that selected our lamb. It’s really rewarding to be able to give back to the 4-h community I (Rachel) grew up showing in.

We have been watching this ewe for weeks, wondering how many were in there and when she would actually lamb. This morning she decided today was the day and delivered triplets, our first set of the season. They have some neat speckled colors to them, 2 boys and a girl! What a way to officially ring in spring!

We ventured to the Fayette County Fair for the Guys and Gals lead!

Guys and Gals Lead, Sheep Lead, Lead Line… the competition has many names but its main purpose is to promote the sheep industry with a wool fashion show!

Contestants lead a sheep around the ring in an outfit made of wool, and the sheep wears a coordinating accessory as well! Contestants model their outfit as a description is read and are judged on their ability to model, their outfit and how well they handle their sheep.

Larkin earned 3rd place! Had a great night despite the monsoon rain we drove through to get there!

Today I delivered my last delivery to The Foodbank in collaboration with the LFPA Grant or Local Food Purchase Assistance. A grant that helped food banks buy food locally from farmers just like me. The grant dollars closed the gap of costs between my price and what a giant retailer sells the food for. This grant was filling a need for those served by the food bank as well as giving local farmers a platform to grow their production or sell excess products, ultimately keeping local grown food here in our communities. Many farmer friends grew their business around this program, and last fall we were all told there would be funding for 2025-2027. Fast forward to this past March when we learned the funding we all had celebrated was terminated. For me it’s definitely a blow to a revenue stream, and for many, myself included, we had to pivot fast because we had animals on feed or big plans for the upcoming growing season that now had to be changed or scaled back.

In this day and age young and beginning farmers like myself have to find a way to make farming as a career work much differently than generations before us. We have to do 50 things for $1000 each vs just planting a crop and making $50,000 to pay all of our bills with. LFPA was one of those hidden gems that kept revenue coming in times when we weren’t “in season”

The cuts are being felt closer than many realize. They are being felt by myself and many others who utilized this and other USDA programs to propel their farms forward for another year.

I am thankful for what the LFPA program brought me. The relationship I have formed with Brandon and the people of The Foodbank in Dayton is something I’ll cherish. The pride felt from feeding people right here in my community is something that only few get to experience, and I’m one of them.

Originally our focus on our farm was cattle, but an opportunity to expand meat sales with lamb presented itself. Now my family raises Suffolk sheep in Southwest Ohio. We sell lamb through farmers markets and directly to restaurants.

We raise Suffolks because they grow quickly and produce big, tasty cuts of meat like sirloin chops and lots of lamburger. That means we can supply markets year-round. We’re raising our family and raising our profits by raising Suffolks.
