You contribute appreciated assets, stock, real estate, or other investments, into an irrevocable trust. The trust sells those assets without triggering capital gains tax, preserving the full value for reinvestment.

From there, the trust pays you income for a set number of years or for life. When the trust term ends, the remainder goes to the charity or charities you’ve chosen.

Fund it. Receive income. Support what matters to you.

What if your charitable giving could also pay you back?

If you give to the causes you care about, here’s something worth knowing: there’s a financial structure that lets you support those causes while also creating an income stream for yourself, and possibly reducing your tax bill in the process.

It’s called a charitable remainder trust, or CRT.

A CRT is a tax exempt trust designed to let you donate appreciated assets to charity while receiving income from those assets during your lifetime.

Your investment plan needs an “emotional firewall.” That means putting systems in place during calm markets that can help you stay disciplined when emotions start running high. A written investment strategy, automatic contributions, regular rebalancing, a clear understanding of why you’re investing, and guidance from a trusted financial professional can all provide perspective. Markets will always give us something to worry about. The question is whether those worries get to control the plan.

Your portfolio is more than a performance number.

Do you remember how investing felt during 2008? For many investors, especially those approaching retirement, those memories can still influence how today’s market movements feel. That’s understandable, but yesterday’s market experience shouldn’t automatically determine today’s financial decisions. Instead of reacting to fear, consider your timeline, risk tolerance, financial goals, and whether anything has actually changed in your long term plan. A good strategy should give you something more reliable than emotion to fall back on when markets get uncomfortable.

This checklist shows you the difference.
