The article below was a real eye opener. Most Americans are not aware of the cost associated with their medical needs as they age from an employe sponsored plan and on to Medicare. I don't understand why a bank, when issuing a mortgage would not insist on the applicant obtaining proper disability and life insurance. Unless they are okay knowing that in the event of a default on the mortgage, they get to take the house back so they are financially okay. People often ask me what the most important insurance is. My answer is... " That depends". One thing I can say is that while people today are living longer than they may have in previous generations, it does not necessarily mean that life will be without its challenges. The biggest of which is that a person with a medical problem might not be in a position to take care of themselves. Additionally, if it were possible to make alterations to your home so you could stay there wouldn't you want to know that your insurance would pay the cost of rennovation? Stories like this make my blood boil! For the years I have been an insurance advisor / broker I have always been there to support my clients and lend a hand so stupid things like the ones covered by this story do not happen to my clients. Whether clienst come to me directly or on referal from the P and C agency I am part of, standing up to insurance companies that make dumb decisions is part of my job.

When medical bills started rolling in, a teacher’s aide in Florida wondered why her insurance suddenly wasn’t covering them. The answer? She owed a balance of 5 cents, so her insurer canceled her policy.
