One of the most common questions I’m getting right now is about GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.
Many people want to know:
“Will Medicare cover these medications?”
The answer is… sometimes, but it depends on the reason they are prescribed.
Here’s how it works with Medicare.
When Medicare WILL cover them
If the medication is prescribed to treat Type 2 diabetes, it is often covered through Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.
For example:
• Ozempic
• Mounjaro
These are commonly included on many Medicare drug formularies when used for diabetes management.
When Medicare usually will NOT cover them
When these medications are prescribed for weight loss alone, Medicare generally does not cover them.
That means medications like:
• Wegovy
• Zepbound
are typically not covered under Medicare drug plans, because Medicare law historically excludes drugs used solely for weight loss.
Without insurance coverage, these medications can cost $900–$1,200+ per month depending on the pharmacy and dosage.
Another important thing to know..
Even when a GLP-1 medication is covered, it often requires:
• Prior authorization
• Specific medical criteria
• Documentation from your doctor
• Sometimes step therapy
This means the doctor must show the medication is medically necessary before the plan approves it.
These medications are changing the conversation around diabetes, weight loss, and heart health BUT the insurance rules around them are still evolving.
If you’re on Medicare and considering a GLP-1 medication, it’s important to understand how your specific prescription drug plan handles it.
Every plan’s formulary and approval requirements are different.
