“Wait—our first RMD is due this year?” That question kicked off a recent meeting, and the clock was ticking: skip it and the IRS can claim a 25% penalty. Together we circled October 31st, double-checked the forms, and even pulled out a voided check to make sure the transfer lands smoothly. But the bigger insight came next: with their business temporarily slower, their taxable income is unusually low. That makes 2025 an ideal window to convert a slice of pre-tax IRA money to a Roth, locking in today’s modest rate and reducing or sidestepping future RMDs altogether.
