Inspector’s Corner — Traffic Talk; Motorcycles – riders running amok, or is it something else?
Folks, riding season is here, and those on 2 wheels are out and about, but even the ones behaving get compromised by cars. Here’s a few scenario types I’ve attended in which the rider was not at fault:
1. Multiple-lane, same-direction traffic, and a car changed lanes without noticing the bike in the car’s blind spot;
2. Car made a left turn, but the driver, who was expecting and looking for oncoming CARS to yield to, looked right through the approaching bike and did not see it;
3. Car made a left turn while the driver noticed the one approaching motorcycle headlight that was mistaken as the two head lights of a car that was really far away.
So, watch your blind spots for bikes (and smart cars), double check your depth perception when making yield determinations, and look for all types of vehicles. This is increasingly important with the proliferation of electric bikes, which are much quicker and faster than bicycles.
As always friends, we are all in this together. Keep your:
Belts buckled
Systems sober
Speed safe
