And so we say a fond farewell to summer, and the end of our Summer Hours.

Beginning this week, our office hours return to normal:

Monday – Friday: 9 am to 5 pm.

Time to put away the flip-flops and sun hats and get ready for the dreaded s*** word.

Boots – check. Shovels – check. Whining about how it was 80 degrees just last week – check.

Fun Fact Friday: Willis Carrier invented the modern air conditioner in 1902!

While humans have long attempted to cool down their homes in hot weather, it was an attempt to deal with humidity in the paper production industry that brought about the modern, electric air conditioner.

I’m guessing it wasn’t long after the first a/c unit was installed in a home, that a father yelled, “Close the door, we’re not cooling the whole neighborhood,” for the first time…

While it will generally not cover the over-the counter options (like patches or gum), counseling in-person, in groups or over quitlines may be included.

Fun Fact Friday: August is American Artist Appreciation month!

When you hear “American Artist,” you may think of well-known names like Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keefe and Mary Cassatt. But the variety of American art and artists runs across all platforms and backgrounds:
- Augusta Savage – a sculptor who was active during the Harlem Renaissance
- George Nakashima – renowned furniture maker whose woodworking studio continues to this day, 26 years after his passing
- Kay WalkingStick – a Cherokee artist famous for landscape paintings and portraits of notable Native American leaders

While these are all great artists to look up online and in person if you can find samples of their work, don’t forget to look closer to home, too!

The Plymouth Arts Center, Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan Visual Artists and others are happy to have visitors to their galleries!

Fun Fact Friday: The widespread adoption of employer-offered health benefits took place during World War 2!

While the practice of companies providing medical and other services to their employees had been around for some time, during World War 2, President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration chose to freeze wages to try to ease inflation. Because companies could not try offer to pay higher salaries, they used health benefits as a means to attract experienced workers.

In 1943, the IRS stated these benefits were tax-free, which Congress wrote into law in 1954.
